This custard recipe is a classic dessert that is smooth, creamy, and delicately sweet. It’s a simple yet elegant treat that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with fresh berries for a burst of fruity flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Custard:

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Serving:

  • Ground nutmeg
  • Fresh berries, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Prepare the Custard Mixture: Heat the milk in a small saucepan until bubbles form around the sides of the pan. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and salt until blended. Slowly stir in the hot milk, then add the vanilla extract.
  3. Strain and Bake: Pour the custard mixture through a strainer into a 1-1/2-quart round baking dish. Sprinkle the top with nutmeg. Place the round baking dish in a larger baking pan and add very hot water to the pan until it reaches within 1/2 inch of the top of the round baking dish.
  4. Bake the Custard: Bake the custard in the water bath for 55-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. The center should be soft and slightly jiggly. Remove the baking dish from the water bath and cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes.
  5. Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the custard until cold. Serve with fresh berries if desired.
