For the Custard:
- 4 cups whole milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Serving:
- Ground nutmeg
- Fresh berries, optional
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Prepare the Custard Mixture: Heat the milk in a small saucepan until bubbles form around the sides of the pan. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and salt until blended. Slowly stir in the hot milk, then add the vanilla extract.
- Strain and Bake: Pour the custard mixture through a strainer into a 1-1/2-quart round baking dish. Sprinkle the top with nutmeg. Place the round baking dish in a larger baking pan and add very hot water to the pan until it reaches within 1/2 inch of the top of the round baking dish.
- Bake the Custard: Bake the custard in the water bath for 55-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. The center should be soft and slightly jiggly. Remove the baking dish from the water bath and cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the custard until cold. Serve with fresh berries if desired.
