Ingredients

Scale

Dairy and Fats

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened (113g)
  • 1 stick margarine, softened (113g)

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (about 420g)
  • 1 heaping teaspoon baking powder (about 4g)
  • Pinch of salt (about 1/8 tsp)
  • 3/4 cup sugar (150g)

Others

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional gel food coloring
  • Optional sprinkles or sanding sugar for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare Butter and Margarine: Place the softened unsalted butter and margarine in an electric mixer bowl. Beat them together until the mixture becomes fluffy and creamy, about 2-3 minutes on medium speed.
  2. Add Sugar and Eggs: Gradually add the sugar, about 1/2 cup at a time, alternating with the eggs. Beat well after each addition to combine thoroughly.
  3. Add Vanilla: Mix in the vanilla extract until evenly incorporated into the batter.
  4. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt to ensure even distribution.
  5. Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture by hand, a little at a time, mixing gently to avoid overworking the dough which can make cookies tough.
  6. Chill Dough: Cover the dough and chill it in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. This helps firm it up for easier pressing.
  7. Chill Baking Sheet: Place your baking sheet in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before baking to help cookies hold their shape better and prevent sticking.
  8. Prepare Cookie Press: Load the chilled dough into your spritz cookie press according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the dough feels too soft, chill it again; if too stiff, let it sit out briefly to soften.
  9. Press Cookies: Press the cookies onto an ungreased chilled baking sheet in your desired shapes.
  10. Decorate: Add sprinkles or sanding sugar on top of the cookies before baking if desired.
  11. Bake: Bake the cookies in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  12. Cool: Remove cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Do not grease the baking sheet; chilling it instead prevents sticking and helps maintain the cookie shapes.
  • Be careful not to overmix the dough once the flour is added to avoid tough cookies.
  • If you want colored dough, add gel food coloring while mixing the wet ingredients.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • For best results, use a spritz cookie press designed for traditional spritz cookies.
