This easy classic Philly Cheesesteak recipe delivers a mouthwatering sandwich filled with thinly sliced steak, sautéed onions, peppers, and melted provolone cheese, all served on a toasted hoagie roll.

Steak:

  • 2 pounds Top sirloin steak or Ribeye (trimmed and sliced very thin)

Vegetables:

  • 4 oz sliced mushrooms
  • 1 large yellow onion (chopped)
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 red bell pepper

Other:

  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil divided
  • 8 slices mild provolone cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 hoagie rolls (sliced through)
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons coarse Kosher salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak: Place the steak in the freezer for 30 minutes, then slice it thinly. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Prepare the Vegetables: Slice onions, chop peppers, and set aside.
  3. Toast the Rolls: Mix softened butter and garlic, spread on cut sides of hoagie rolls, toast until golden brown.
  4. Sauté Onions: Cook onions until caramelized, then set aside.
  5. Cook the Steak: Sear steak slices in oil, add onions, and cook together.
  6. Assemble the Cheesesteaks: Divide meat and onions, top with cheese, and melt. Fill hoagie rolls with the mixture.
