5.1 from 10 reviews

General Tso’s Chicken is a popular Chinese-American dish featuring crispy fried chicken pieces coated in a sweet, tangy, and mildly spicy sauce. This recipe combines tender chicken cubes fried to golden perfection and tossed in a flavorful sauce made with sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, and a hint of chili flakes, perfect for a comforting and delicious meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 4 chicken breasts, cubed

Breading

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or cornstarch)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp garlic salt

Sauce

  • 1 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 6 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp red chili pepper flakes (optional)
  • 3/4 cup oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken: Cube the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour (or cornstarch), paprika, and garlic salt to create the breading mixture. Coat each chicken piece evenly with the breading to ensure a crispy texture when fried.
  2. Fry the chicken: Heat 3/4 cup of oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Carefully fry the breaded chicken pieces in batches to avoid overcrowding, which helps maintain the oil temperature and crispiness. Cook each batch until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through, then remove and drain on paper towels.
  3. Make the sauce: In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, white distilled vinegar, salt, soy sauce, and red chili pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently to dissolve the sugar.
  4. Combine chicken and sauce: Add the fried chicken pieces into the boiling sauce. Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for about 12 minutes or until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken nicely.
  5. Serve: Once the sauce has thickened and the chicken is well coated, remove from heat. Serve hot, ideally with steamed rice and steamed vegetables for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, use cornstarch instead of all-purpose flour for breading.
  • Adjust the amount of red chili pepper flakes according to your preferred spice level.
  • Do not overcrowd the frying pan to ensure the chicken fries evenly and stays crispy.
  • General Tso’s Chicken pairs well with steamed broccoli or snap peas for a balanced meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
