This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a hearty and comforting dish that’s perfect for family dinners or dinner parties. Layers of seasoned ground beef patties, potatoes, onions, and a creamy gravy baked to perfection with a cheesy topping.

Ingredients

Scale

For the beef patties:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 cups milk, divided
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

For the layers:

  • 45 medium Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare Beef Patties: Season the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 6 patties. Cook in a skillet until browned on both sides and set aside.
  3. Make Gravy: In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and flour until smooth. Gradually add remaining milk, stirring to form a gravy. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Layer Ingredients: Arrange potatoes and onions in the baking dish. Place browned patties on top. Add remaining potatoes and onions. Pour gravy over the dish.
  5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour. Uncover, top with cheddar cheese, and bake for an additional 15 minutes until cheese is melted.

Notes

  • For a bit of spice, add paprika or hot sauce to the beef mixture.
  • Adjust onion quantity for picky eaters.
  • Slice potatoes evenly for consistent cooking.
  • Try a healthier version with ground turkey, low-fat milk, and cheese.
  • Leftovers taste great the next day!
