Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted
  • 2 cans refrigerated orange rolls, cut into quarters

Custard Mixture

  • 4 eggs
  • 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest and juice of 1 orange

Icing

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 34 tablespoons orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Pour the melted butter into a 9×13-inch baking dish and swirl around to coat the bottom evenly.
  2. Arrange rolls: Cut refrigerated orange rolls into quarters and arrange them evenly in the prepared baking dish. Set aside while you prepare the custard mixture.
  3. Make custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, light brown sugar, vanilla extract, and freshly grated orange zest and juice until well combined.
  4. Combine rolls and custard: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the orange roll quarters in the baking dish, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
  5. Optional chilling: Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate overnight or up to several hours if preparing ahead of time.
  6. Bake: Remove the foil if chilled, and bake the casserole uncovered for 30-35 minutes, or until the rolls are cooked through but still soft in the center.
  7. Cool: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes to set up slightly before icing.
  8. Prepare icing: In a bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, orange zest, and 3 tablespoons of orange juice. Then whisk in melted butter. Adjust the consistency by adding more orange juice for a thinner glaze or more powdered sugar for a thicker icing.
  9. Serve: Drizzle the icing generously over the warm casserole. Slice and serve immediately for a delicious breakfast or brunch treat.

Notes

  • You can prepare this casserole the night before and let it soak in the custard overnight for extra flavor.
  • For convenience, use the icing that comes with the orange roll package instead of making your own icing.
  • Make sure not to overbake; the rolls should be soft and tender inside.
  • Fresh orange zest and juice provide the best flavor; avoid bottled juice if possible.
