Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Filling
- 1 cup pizza sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup chopped pepperoni (optional)
- Optional: sautéed vegetables (bell peppers, onions, mushrooms)
Finishing
- 1 egg (for egg wash) or 2 tbsp melted butter (optional for brushing)
- Prepare the Dough: Combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating that the yeast is active. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and olive oil. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead the dough by hand or with a mixer until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until it doubles in size.
- Roll Out the Dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release air bubbles. Lightly flour a surface and roll the dough out to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Cut and Fill: Use a knife or pizza cutter to slice the dough into 3-inch squares. Spoon about a tablespoon of pizza sauce onto each square, followed by shredded mozzarella cheese and your choice of pepperoni or sautéed vegetables.
- Roll and Seal: Fold each square into a roll, making sure to pinch the edges firmly to seal in the filling and prevent leaks during baking.
- Bake or Air Fry: Arrange the rolls seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with an egg wash made from a beaten egg or melted butter for a golden finish. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15–20 minutes until golden brown, or air fry at 375°F for 10–12 minutes until cooked through and crisp.
- Serve: Allow the pizza rolls to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Pair them with marinara sauce, garlic butter, or your favorite dipping sauce for an irresistible snack or appetizer.
Notes
- You can customize the filling with any of your favorite pizza toppings like olives, ham, or different cheeses.
- For a crispier crust, brush the rolls with melted butter before baking instead of egg wash.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven for best texture.
- To make this recipe vegetarian, omit the pepperoni and load up on vegetables.
- Ensure the yeast is fresh and water is warm but not hot to achieve proper dough rising.
