4.8 from 21 reviews

A quick and easy recipe for creamy, flavorful refried beans using pantry staples and simple spices, perfect as a side dish or dip.

Ingredients

Scale

Beans and Liquids

  • 1 (28 oz) (850 g) can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Spices

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the drained and rinsed pinto beans, water, diced onion, minced garlic, chili powder, cumin, dried oregano, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper to taste. Stir well to mix all the flavors.
  2. Simmer and Mash: Simmer the mixture over low heat for 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld. Then, mash the beans using a potato masher or the back of a spoon. The texture will be somewhat chunky, not completely smooth.
  3. Cook to Desired Consistency: Continue cooking the mashed beans over low heat for an additional 10 minutes or until they reach your desired thickness. Stir occasionally to prevent the beans from sticking or burning. Note that the beans will thicken more as they cool.

Notes

  • You can add a bit of olive oil or butter for a richer flavor and smoother texture if desired.
  • Adjust the level of cayenne pepper according to your spice preference.
  • For an even creamier texture, you can blend the beans after mashing.
  • Serve as a side dish for Mexican or Tex-Mex meals or use as a dip with tortilla chips.
