Dough
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Pinch of salt
- 4 Tbsp butter, melted (divided)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Filling
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp butter, melted
Cream Cheese Topping
- 5 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–4 Tbsp buttermilk
- Preheat Oven. Set your oven to preheat at 425°F (218°C) to get it ready for baking the sweet rolls.
- Mix Dough Ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, baking powder, buttermilk, a pinch of salt, 4 tablespoons of melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until just combined to avoid overworking the dough.
- Prepare the Filling. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons melted butter until well incorporated.
- Knead the Dough. Lightly flour a work surface and turn out the dough. Knead it gently just a few times to bring it together smoothly.
- Divide and Roll Out Dough. Split the dough into two equal pieces. Roll each into a rectangle about ¼ to 1/8 inch thick.
- Apply Filling and Roll. Spread half of the spiced filling mixture evenly over each dough rectangle. Starting from the longer side, roll the dough tightly into logs, sealing the edges.
- Trim and Slice. Cut off uneven ends from the dough logs for neatness. Slice each log into 12 equal rolls.
- Arrange Rolls in Pan. Place the rolls flat side down into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, giving them space to expand.
- Brush with Butter. Brush the tops of the rolls with the remaining melted butter to promote browning.
- Bake. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until golden and cooked through, then remove and let cool for about 20 minutes.
- Prepare Cream Cheese Topping. While the rolls cool, mix softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and 2 to 4 tablespoons of buttermilk until smooth to create a spreadable glaze.
- Glaze and Serve. Generously spread the cream cheese topping over the warm rolls before serving for a deliciously creamy finish.
Notes
- Be careful not to overmix the dough to keep the rolls tender.
- Adjust buttermilk quantity in the glaze to reach your desired consistency.
- Allow rolls to cool slightly before adding the topping so it doesn’t melt too much.
- You can store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat gently before serving.
- For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg to the filling.
