A comforting classic, Salisbury Steak is a delicious dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a savory gravy. This recipe yields juicy patties with a flavorful onion and breadcrumb filling, served with a rich beef broth-based gravy.

Ingredients

Scale

Patties:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Gravy:

  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Patties: In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  2. Shape: Form the mixture into oval patties about 3/4 inch thick.
  3. Sear: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties for about 4 minutes per side until golden brown.
  4. Make Roux: Remove patties; whisk flour into the skillet drippings to form a roux. Gradually add beef broth while stirring until smooth.
  5. Simmer: Return patties to the skillet and simmer for 5 minutes to meld flavors.
  6. Serve: Drizzle gravy over the patties and serve with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.

Notes

  • You can customize the seasoning of the patties with herbs or spices of your choice.
  • For a richer gravy, you can add a splash of heavy cream or a dollop of sour cream.
  • Leftover Salisbury Steak makes a great sandwich filling the next day!
