Sloppy Joe Topping:
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 2 celery ribs, chopped
- 1 small green pepper, finely chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed tomato soup, undiluted
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
- 1–1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Dogs:
- 16 hot dogs
- 16 hot dog buns, split
- Optional: Warmed cheese dip and grilled onions
- Prepare the Sloppy Joe Topping: In a Dutch oven, cook the ground beef, chopped celery, green pepper, and onion over medium heat until the beef is no longer pink and vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes. Break the meat into crumbles while cooking and drain any excess fat.
- Add the Sauce Ingredients: Stir in the condensed tomato soup, brown sugar, ketchup, cider vinegar, prepared mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt, and garlic powder. Mix well and heat the mixture through on medium heat for a few minutes to combine the flavors.
- Grill the Hot Dogs: While the topping simmers, grill the hot dogs covered over medium heat for 6-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until heated through and slightly charred if desired.
- Assemble the Sloppy Joe Dogs: Place each grilled hot dog in a split bun. Spoon about 1/4 cup of the sloppy joe beef mixture over each hot dog. If desired, add warmed cheese dip and grilled onions on top for extra flavor.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the sloppy joe topping.
- Drain excess fat from the cooked beef to reduce greasiness.
- You can make the sloppy joe topping ahead of time and reheat when ready to serve.
- Try serving with a side of coleslaw or potato chips for a classic feel.
- Warm the buns before serving for extra softness and better texture.
