Ingredients

Scale

Cake Base

  • 1 angel food cake
  • 2 cups Cool Whip, divided

Cream Layer

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar (from the divided sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Cool Whip (leftover from 2 cups)

Strawberry Glaze and Topping

  • 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sugar (from the divided sugar)
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 (3 ounce) package strawberry Jell-O
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Make the Glaze: In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch, strawberry Jell-O powder, lemon juice, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture boils and thickens into a glaze. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Berries: Gently fold the sliced fresh strawberries into the cooled strawberry glaze, ensuring the berries are evenly coated without breaking them apart.
  3. Create the Base: Tear the angel food cake into 1-inch pieces and place them in a mixing bowl. Add 2 cups of Cool Whip and gently combine. Press this mixture firmly into the bottom of a baking dish to form the dessert base layer.
  4. Whip Up the Cream: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with 1/2 cup sugar and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Fold in the remaining 1 cup of Cool Whip gently to maintain a light texture. Spread this cream layer evenly over the angel food cake base in the baking dish.
  5. Add the Topping: Pour the strawberry and glaze mixture evenly over the cream cheese layer, ensuring full coverage.
  6. Chill and Set: Refrigerate the assembled dessert for 2 to 3 hours to allow it to set properly and the flavors to meld before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened to room temperature for easier mixing and a smoother texture.
  • Use fresh, ripe strawberries for the best flavor and sweetness in the glaze and topping.
  • You can prepare the glaze and cake layers in advance and refrigerate for up to one day before assembling to save time.
  • This dessert is best served chilled and should be kept refrigerated until serving.
  • If angel food cake is unavailable, a light sponge cake can be substituted, but the texture will be slightly denser.
